Director Zoe Duff, who lives with two partners and dates others, explained how it works. Duff: It’s for anyone anywhere, although certain personalities are more suited and have a better time. At our first Polycon, in celebration of the judge’s decision to protect our rights, we had an all-polyamorous band and there was certainly a fair bit of socializing.... Some choose to have primary, secondary, and tertiary but it’s not popular. With my partners we are all co-partners – I prefer different ones at different moments, depending on whether we are hiking, cooking etc.
A lot of people who come to our events are well-educated, computer literate, like role-playing games and are not afraid to stand out. Does the liberalization of gay marriage laws give you hope this type of relationship will gain acceptance?
So, you want an update about what’s happening with the San Diego Poly Family NOW?
It must have been prompted by her fine interview in Vice magazine a few days before (the media copy each other).
Obviously, part of the show’s appeal is that these polyamorous people are having sex right on the screen in front of you, but it would be nice if the direction focused a little less on the “kinky” aspects of their lives and more on their interpersonal relationships.
For example, it’s surprising to see genuine jealousy and discomfort from some of the members of these families, despite their established lifestyles.
Each family has their own rules and processes for navigating their relationship, which is very reasonable, but also results in occasionally hilarious things being said — such as: “The Triad is strong.”That line aside, though, this episode did not showcase much of the show’s potential for interesting dialogue.
Polyamory: married and dating is a cable televisions series. Watching the show and how the cast talks you are kind of taken back to the 1960s when there was so much though and talk about free love and doing what feels good. Even while trying to be laid back, passive and all about freedom, some of the cast comes across as passive aggressive in their dealings with one another. It may sound strange but those scenes are the least exciting and interesting parts of the show.
